REMOVING RUST FROM HARD SURFACES and LAUNDRY

RUST ON KNIFE BLADES COMING OUT OF DISHWASHER

The blades of stainless steel knives have harder steel in them to help maintain the cutting edge. This rusts more readily, especially when it has had an acidic food on it such as marinara sauce. To remove it, grab the Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser. This is a mild pumice-type cleanser that won’t scratch. Wet a paper towel and sprinkle on the cleanser. Rub the knife over it until the rust is gone. Wash immediately. Find Bar Keepers in grocery stores, big box stores, home centers etc. Comes in a bright gold can with dark blue writing.

RUST ON METAL and HARD SURFACES:

Potato and dish soap

I know it sounds crazy, but it really works. Cut your potato in half and cover the open end with dish soap. Use the potato like you would a scouring pad and watch the rust fade away as it reacts with the soap and potato. I have used this on cast iron with success.

Lemon and salt – This is great for rust on countertops etc.

Generously coat the rusted area in a layer of salt. Cut a lemon in half, and squeeze the juice over the salt. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes or so and then scrub away the rust with the lemon rind. If rust remains, repeat the procedure and let the salt and juice sit for another hour or two, until rust disappears completely. Rinse and dry.

TOILET BOWL RUST – Safe for septic tanks too

Instead of harsh chemicals reach for the Tang™ or any powdered orange flavored breakfast drink. Don’t have that, then use 2 or 3 packages of lemon Kool Aid. Pour in, swish and let sit in the toilet for a few hours or overnight. Scrub with a toilet brush and flush. The citric acid is what removes the rust.

RUST ON TILE and OTHER HARD SURFACES

Combine lemon juice and Cream of Tartar (spice area at store) into a paste the thickness of white school glue. Apply to the surface and work in. Let sit an hour or so and then rub, wipe and wash.

RUST ON POOL DECKING:

Do on cool pool deck and not in direct sun.

Wet the surface well and sprinkle on Bar Keepers Friend™ Cleanser. Work it in and allow it to sit about 15 minutes or so. Rub gently, don’t scrub. Once rust is gone, rinse well.

RUST ON CHROME

Rub chrome with the shiny side of aluminum foil until the rust is gone.

LAUNDRY and FABRICS

Apply lemon juice to white fabrics and sit in the sun. You can also wet the fabric and work in Cream of Tartar. Let sit, check to see if rust is gone, repeat as needed, wash.

You can use these to remove rust from fabrics, as well as other surfaces. Always read the label first and follow directions carefully. Find these at home centers, hardware stores, big box stores, some grocery stores and Amazon.
