Cleaning Up Dog and Cat Hair

Don’t let hair build up. It makes it harder to remove and takes longer.

Cat hair tends to be softer, collect on surfaces and fabrics and fly in the air more.

Dog hair can be coarser and tends to catch in fabrics. Sometimes brushing up dog hair with a soft brush is helpful.

Hand vacuuming in all of these cases helps before you do anything else.

Next try one of these methods:

• A lint roller works well.
• A damp sponge will roll the pet hair up so you can rinse it off the sponge and continue wiping the hair up. Don’t over wet the sponge. It should only be damp.
• You can put on a pair of rubber gloves and wet them in a container of water. Shake off excess water, wipe, rinse the glove and continue.

Removing Dog and Cat Urine

Pet urine stains are best treated as soon as possible. First blot up all that you can from the carpet by using pads of paper towels. Lay the paper towel pad over the urine and stand on it to absorb all you can.

I like to pour on a little club soda as quickly as I can. The carbonation will bubble up the urine and the salts helps to keep any stains from forming. Pour it on and then blot, blot, blot!

Once you have done that, spray on a solution of 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 cool water. Again blot, blot, blot.

Allow to dry

If there is a stain, treat with carpet spotter. I use Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover for my kitties. Find Spot Shot at grocery and home centers. It’s a bright blue can with an orange lid.

For odor, use OdorZout™. It is a totally natural dry product that eliminates odor by absorbing it rather than covering it up. (Amazon). Use according to directions.

If you own a carpet cleaning machine, now is the time to use it. Blot up all the urine you can, then treat with the vinegar/water and extract it using cool water. This is your best option for removing pet urine. Remember, a pet accident can go through the carpet fibers down into the carpet and sometimes even the pad.

For any remaining stains, combine ½ cup of3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of ammonia. Apply without heavily wetting the area. Let sit 30 minutes and then blot. Repeat if needed.

Cleaning Up Pet Vomit

Pour a heavy coat of baking soda over the offending spot – be sure to cover completely.

Let sit until it dries. This could be overnight.

Lift off with paper towels and use a dull straight edge, like a putty knife, to lift off the baking soda and accident.

Vacuum thoroughly to remove all baking soda and dried accident. Use only the hose attachment on the vacuum to concentrate the suction. If you have the VaccUFlex tool, use that. If a spot remains, treat with your favorite spotter. I like Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover.

Pet Bedding

Pet bedding should be cleaned weekly. I pick up pillow cases at the Goodwill and put in the cat beds. I change them as the hair builds up. It easier than vacuuming all the time and keeps the bed and the area around it clean.

Keeping Cat and Dogs From Chewing On Things They Shouldn’t

Bitter Apple is a product made for this. Its bitter taste deters your pets from chewing on plants, wood, fabrics etc. You can find it at all pet stores. There are other similar products in the same shelf area so you can choose the one that is best for you. These products cost between $10-$15.

I like to make my own bitter-type spray. That way I know that when my pets get it in their mouths when they go to chew, it is safe and natural and very inexpensive.

Here’s the easy recipe.

BITTER FLAVOR SPRAY FOR DOGS AND CATS

YOU WILL NEED:

White Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar

Juice of one lemon – If your dog likes the taste of lemon eliminate this

A labeled spray bottle

TO MAKE:

Use 2 parts white vinegar and 1 part apple cider vinegar (if using lemon add it also). Put this in a labeled spray bottle.

Spray/mist on anything that the dog/cat is chewing on or trying to eat, including plants, silk flowers, etc.
