Getting the most out of the time you spend vacuuming. What to do, when and how. Follow this and you won’t suck at vacuuming!

How to:

  1. Getting Started:
  2. Vacuuming should be the last thing you do so that you pick up whatever dust you left behind.
  3. Before you start pick up anything that is big enough to jam the beater brush. That would be paper clips, small toys, coins etc.
  4. Does your vacuum have a bag? Replace it when it is 2/3 full. If the bag is packed you lose suction and you won't do as good of a job.
  5. Do you have a canister vacuum? Empty it before you begin. Be sure the beater bar brush is free of obstructions.
  6. GOT STAIRS? On the way up the stairs use the crevice tool, if you have one, or only the hose, if not and vacuum edges and crevices.
  7. Coming back down the stairs, vacuum the treads thoroughly. A vacuum with a beater bar (brush) is best for this)
  8. How Long To Vacuum? How Many Times to Go Over It?
  9. This is a head slapper! It can take as many as seven passes over carpet and rugs to pick up all the junk that is stuck in the fibers. Things like pet hair, fuzz etc.
  10. For best results, overlap your strokes in one direction, turn the vacuum about 90 degrees and do it all over again.
  11. The Finish: Give the entire room another go over in both directions.
  12. Don't be afraid to repeat this on heavily soiled carpet and rugs.
  13. UPHOLSTERY: That's what that cute little brush is for! Vacuum under the cushions, the base, seat back and arms not forgetting the sides
  14. Now vacuum the cuhions on both sides and replace
  15. These fabrics usually get sucked into the vacuum. To avoid this, cover the attachment with a stocking , knee-high or piece of net. This will avoid the problem.
  16. Vacuuming Loose Fabrics, like drapes, curtains - even throws and pet beds

Linda Says:

As the kids get older vacuuming is a great chore for them. Teach them to do it the right way so you don't waste their time and yours!
